Erskineville is about six kilometres south-west of the CBD in the City of Sydney, between Newtown, Redfern, Alexandria and St Peters. It was called Macdonaldtown until 1893. In the late 1800s its industries were brickmaking, tanning and market gardens, and its streets filled with small Victorian cottages and terraces; heritage conservation areas now cover about three-quarters of the suburb. Yet at the 2021 census more than six in ten Erskineville homes were flats or apartments, about a third were terraces, semis or townhouses, and only about one in thirty was a freestanding house.

Erskineville has two housing stories running side by side. One is the old suburb of terraces and cottages on narrow lots, along with the Erskineville Rehousing Scheme, an experiment in which the NSW Government had built seven blocks of homes by 1938 on part of Erskineville Park, near Elliott Avenue and Swanson, Binning and Ashmore Streets. The other is the Ashmore precinct in the south-east, former brick, pottery and steel works land between Ashmore Street, Mitchell Road, Coulson Street and the railway line, which the City of Sydney has been turning into thousands of new homes, mostly apartments and including build-to-rent buildings. The suburb's industrial past is also in its parks: Sydney Park on the southern edge was the Bedford brickworks, whose clay pits served as a council tip from 1948 to 1976. All of Erskineville falls in the City of Sydney's Alexandra Canal flood catchment, which drains towards Botany Bay.

Every part of Sydney has its own plumbing character, shaped by the age of the housing, the ground it sits on, and the weather it takes. Here is what we are called out for most often around Erskineville.

In a building only a few years old, a ceiling stain usually starts in the apartment above: a shower waste, a flexible hose under a sink, or a fitting behind a vanity. In the Ashmore buildings, with so many homes rented, the call often comes through building management or an agent. Finding the exact source before anything is cut open keeps the repair small and puts it with the right owner.

Behind most Erskineville terraces is a small courtyard, often tiled or paved, with the sewer running under it and sometimes under a rear addition as well. Digging that line up means lifting everything above it. When a camera shows the pipe is cracked or rooty but still in one piece, relining it from the inside leaves the courtyard as it is.

Pipework in a Victorian terrace may have been patched several times in a century without ever being fully replaced, so a single line can be a mix of old earthenware and newer PVC. Blockages tend to form where the two meet, at a joint that has dropped or opened. Clearing restores flow; knowing exactly where the bad joint sits is what lets you decide whether to fix it.

A terrace lot is almost all roof and paving, so a heavy storm sends everything into a couple of pits and a narrow stormwater line. If a grate is silted or the line is broken, the water backs up towards the back door. The City of Sydney's flood information covers the street and catchment; the pits and lines inside your boundary are what we check and fix.

Common Questions

Let your building manager or strata manager and the neighbour above know straight away, and turn off the water to anything in your own unit that may be involved. We trace the leak to its source and document it, so the repair and the cost go to whoever is responsible.

Often, yes. We camera the line first. If the pipe is cracked or has roots in it but has not collapsed, it can be relined from the inside through an existing opening, so the courtyard stays as it is. If a section has collapsed, it has to be dug up, and the footage shows which.

In older terraces it is usually a joint that has dropped or opened, often where newer pipe has been joined to old, or roots that have found their way in. A camera inspection shows the cause and where it is, so you know whether clearing will last.

Tell your agent or landlord first, because they usually need to approve the work. If they ask you to arrange a plumber, we can attend and give them a fixed price before any work starts.

Yes. Our phones are answered 24 hours a day, including weekends and public holidays, and we send a licensed plumber out after hours for problems that can't safely wait, such as water coming through a ceiling, sewage backing up or a burst pipe.
