(02) 9139 8945 — available 24/7Plumbing on a kitchen renovation happens in two visits, with the cabinetmaker, benchtop installer and tiler working in between. Getting the order right is what stops a new kitchen being pulled apart later.
Before anything is built, we look at where the sink, dishwasher, fridge and any filter or boiling-water tap will go, and where the existing water and waste lines are. Keeping the sink near its current position is usually the simplest option. Moving it is common too, but it is worth knowing early what it involves.
With the old kitchen out and the walls and floor open, we run new hot and cold water lines and the waste pipe to where the new sink and appliances will be, then cap them off ready. Anything hidden in the wall or floor has to be done at this stage, because it can't be reached once the cabinets and splashback are in.
Once the cabinets and benchtop are installed, we come back to fit the sink and mixer, connect the waste, and connect the dishwasher, filter tap and any other appliances. Then everything is run and checked for leaks before we leave.
Connecting a gas cooktop or oven is work for a licensed gas fitter, and our gas fitters can do it as part of the same job. Power points for a dishwasher, a boiling-water unit or a garbage disposal are work for a licensed electrician.
Moving the sink is one of the most common requests in a kitchen renovation. Whether it is simple depends mostly on the waste pipe, not the water lines.
Water lines can run almost anywhere, but the waste pipe has to fall continuously towards the drain. The further the sink moves from the existing waste, the more room that pipe needs under the floor or in the wall.
On a timber floor with access underneath, new pipes can usually run through the subfloor. On a concrete slab, moving a sink any real distance can mean cutting a channel in the slab for the waste pipe, so it is worth knowing which you have before the design is settled.
An island has no wall behind it, so the water and waste have to come up through the floor, and the waste still needs venting so it drains properly and doesn't gurgle or let smells back in. It is very doable, but it is planned at rough-in, not after the island is built.
If the budget is tight, keeping the sink and dishwasher roughly where they were usually saves the most plumbing work. Moving the cooktop or fridge is often easier than moving the sink.
A dishwasher needs a water supply with its own isolation tap and a waste connection into the sink plumbing, with the drain hose run so dirty water can't siphon back into the machine. Most connect to the cold supply; the manual for your model says which.
Under-bench filters connect to the cold water line and feed a separate filter tap or a three-way mixer. The cartridge needs replacing at the interval the maker specifies, so we fit it where you can reach it in the cupboard.
These need a cold water connection, cupboard space under the sink for the unit, and a power point, which a licensed electrician installs.
A fridge with an ice maker or water dispenser needs its own cold water line, ideally with an isolation tap you can reach without pulling the fridge out.
A slow or blocked kitchen sink is one of the most common calls we get. What it means depends on how far the blockage reaches.
Usually grease, food scraps or coffee grounds in the trap under the sink or the first section of pipe. Fat poured down the sink is liquid when it goes in and sets as it cools, coating the pipe and catching everything that follows.
If the dishwasher pumps out into the sink, or the other bowl fills when one drains, the blockage is further along the shared waste pipe, past the trap.
If the laundry, shower or toilet also drain slowly or gurgle, the problem is in the main line rather than the kitchen, and our blocked drain service covers that, with a camera to find the cause.
Chemical drain cleaners rarely shift a grease blockage, can damage older pipes and seals, and leave caustic water sitting in the sink. If a plunger doesn't clear it, call a plumber.

Common Questions
Usually a build-up of grease, food scraps or coffee grounds in the trap or the waste pipe under the sink. If only the kitchen sink is affected, the blockage is close by. If the dishwasher or other fixtures back up too, it is further down the line. We clear it and tell you which it was.
Rough-in is the first stage of renovation plumbing: running the water and waste pipes to the new positions while the walls and floor are open, before the cabinets go in. Fit-off is the second stage, after the cabinets and benchtop are installed, when the sink, taps and appliances are connected and tested.
