Many hot water faults are a single part. Some mean the system has reached the end of its life. This is how we tell the difference.
Usually a repair
A tripped or failed element or thermostat on an electric system, a pilot or ignition fault on gas, a worn relief or tempering valve, or a leak from a fitting rather than the tank itself. These are parts, and a system that is otherwise sound can have years left in it.
Usually a replacement
Water leaking from the tank itself, rust coming through the tank, or a system past about ten years old that keeps needing parts. At that point, spending on repairs tends to delay the replacement rather than avoid it.
What happens on the day
We check the system, tell you what has failed and why, and give you a fixed price for the repair or the replacement options before anything starts. For a replacement, we talk through the size and type that suits your household, remove the old unit, install and test the new one, and show you how it works.
Safe Checks Before You Call
A few things are worth checking first. Anything beyond these is a job for a licensed plumber, electrician or gas fitter.
Electric systems
Check whether the hot water circuit has tripped at the switchboard. If it trips again when you reset it, leave it off and call, because that points to a fault in the element or wiring. On off-peak tariffs, hot water that runs out late in the day may be the tariff rather than a fault.
Gas systems
Check that other gas appliances are working and that the gas is on at the meter. If the pilot has gone out, the relighting steps are usually printed on the unit. If it won't stay lit, or you smell gas, stop and call.
Any system
Look for water around the base of the unit and at the relief valve. A leak from the tank itself changes the answer from repair to replacement. Our hot water troubleshooting guide covers these checks symptom by symptom.
Choosing a Replacement
Electric storage
Simple and usually the least expensive to install, but the most expensive type to run unless it heats on an off-peak tariff.
Gas storage and continuous flow
Gas storage keeps a tank of water hot; continuous flow heats water only as you use it, so it doesn't run out. Both need a gas supply that can handle the unit.
Heat pump
Works like a reverse air conditioner, drawing heat from the air to heat water, and uses much less electricity than a standard electric tank. It needs outdoor space with airflow, and some models are noisier than others, which matters near a bedroom window or the neighbours.
Solar
Collectors on the roof heat the water with a gas or electric booster for cloudy days. It suits a home with a roof that gets good sun for most of the day.

How long do hot water systems last?
Most systems last 8–12 years. If yours is older than 10 years and failing, replacement is often more cost-effective than repair.
What size system do I need?
It depends on your household size. We'll assess your usage and recommend the right capacity and type for your situation.
Can you replace my system the same day?
In many cases yes — we carry common models in our vans. More complex installations may be scheduled for the next day.
Do you offer solar or heat pump systems?
Yes — we supply, install and service solar hot water and heat pump systems and can advise on rebates available.
Water is leaking from my hot water tank. Is that an emergency?
If water is running from the tank itself, yes. Close the cold water valve on the inlet pipe at the unit and, for an electric system, switch off its circuit at the switchboard if you can reach it without standing in water. Then call. A storage tank that has split can't be repaired and keeps leaking until it is isolated and replaced.
Why is the relief valve on my hot water system dripping?
A small amount of water from the relief valve while the water is heating is normal for many storage systems, because water expands as it heats. A steady flow, or a valve that drips all day, usually points to a worn valve or pressure that is too high, and both are worth having checked.
My hot water runs out faster than it used to. Why?
Common causes are a failing element or thermostat on an electric system, a burner or ignition fault on gas, sediment building up in the bottom of the tank, or a household that has simply outgrown the system. We work out which before recommending a repair or a replacement.
Do you work on gas hot water systems?
Yes. Gas hot water work is done by a licensed gas fitter. If you smell gas, get everyone outside, leave switches alone and call your gas distributor's emergency line or 000 from outside, then a licensed gas fitter.
