If a single fixture drains slowly and everything else is normal, the blockage is usually close to that fixture: hair, soap, food scraps or grease. It is worth fixing before it closes up completely, but it is not an emergency.
A toilet that gurgles when the shower runs, or water coming up in the shower when the washing machine empties, means the blockage is further down, where several fixtures share one pipe.
Most Sydney houses have an overflow relief gully outside, a grate near the house that is designed to overflow first when the sewer blocks further down. Water or sewage coming up there means the main line is blocked. Stop flushing and running water and call.
Waste water backing up through a floor waste, shower or toilet is a health risk and gets worse every time water is used in the house. Treat it as urgent, day or night.
Clearing a drain without knowing why it blocked is how the same drain ends up blocked again a few months later. So the camera goes in first.
We run a CCTV drain camera down the line to see what is causing the blockage and where it is: tree roots at a joint, a build-up of grease, wipes, a cracked or dislodged pipe, or a section that has sagged and holds water. You see the footage on the screen as we do.
Most blockages in the main line are cleared with a high-pressure jet blaster, which scours the full width of the pipe rather than punching a hole through the blockage. Some small, local blockages are quicker to clear with a drain machine.
Once it is flowing, the camera goes back down. That confirms the line is clear, and it shows the condition of the pipe itself, which you can't see while it is full of roots or grease.
If the pipe is sound, clearing may be all it needs. If the camera shows cracks, open joints or a collapsed section, roots and waste will keep catching there, and we'll show you the footage and explain the options, including no-dig pipe relining, with a price before anything is done.
Older Sydney homes often drain through clay (earthenware) pipe laid in short lengths with a joint every metre or so. As the joints age and the ground moves, they open up and roots find the moisture. It is the most common cause of a blocked sewer in older suburbs.
Fat poured down the sink is liquid when it goes in and sets as it cools, coating the pipe and catching everything that follows. Kitchen lines slowly narrow until they stop.
Wipes labelled flushable don't break down the way toilet paper does. They snag on joints, roots and rough pipe and build up into a blockage.
Reactive clay soil across much of Sydney swells and shrinks with the seasons and takes buried pipe with it. A joint that has dropped or a crack in the pipe catches waste every time, so clearing it on its own does not keep it clear.
Stormwater drains carry leaves, silt and garden soil. A pit that is never cleaned out, or a line that has lost its fall, fills up until the yard floods in heavy rain.

Because the cause decides the fix. Roots, grease, wipes and a broken pipe all block a drain, but they need different treatment. The camera shows which it is and exactly where, and a second look after clearing confirms the drain is clear and shows the condition of the pipe.
Usually because something in the pipe keeps catching waste: roots growing back through the same open joints, a crack, or a section that has sagged. Clearing gets it flowing again, but the fault is still there. A camera inspection shows whether that is the case and whether relining that section would stop it.
We'd advise against it. Chemical cleaners won't shift roots, a broken pipe or a build-up of wipes, and harsh chemicals can damage older pipes and are dangerous to handle. If a plunger doesn't clear a single slow fixture, it is time for a plumber.
