If any of these is happening, call straight away. Each one gets worse, or more dangerous, the longer it runs.
A burst pipe or water you can't stop
A split pipe, a failed flexi hose under a sink or toilet, or a leak that keeps running after you close the nearest valve. If only the main stop tap stops it, the whole property is without water until it is repaired.
Flooding inside, especially near electrics
Water across the floor, coming through a ceiling or a light fitting, or pooling near power points and the switchboard. Keep clear of the water and deal with the electrical risk first (see below).
No water at all
Check whether your neighbours have water. If they don't either, it is most likely a Sydney Water supply issue rather than your plumbing. If it is only your property, the cause is often a burst on your own water service, a fault at the meter, or a stop tap that has been turned off.
Sewage coming up
Waste water backing up through a floor waste, shower or toilet, or bubbling out of the overflow relief gully in the yard. It is a health risk, and every flush or tap run in the house makes it worse.
A leaking hot water tank
Water running from the tank itself, not just a drip from the relief valve pipe. A storage tank that has split will keep leaking until it is isolated and replaced.
A smell of gas
Get everyone outside, leave light switches and appliances alone, and ring 000 or your gas distributor's emergency line from outside. Once it is safe, the leak needs a licensed gas fitter.
What to Do Before the Plumber Arrives
These steps limit the damage while you wait. Only do what you can do safely.
1. Turn off the water main
The main stop tap is usually beside the water meter near the front boundary, sometimes in a small box at ground level. Turn it clockwise to shut off the whole property. Older taps can be stiff, so use steady pressure rather than force.
2. Or just the fixture
Most toilets, basins, kitchen sinks, dishwashers and washing machines have a small isolation valve on the supply pipe underneath or behind them. Closing it stops the water to that fixture and leaves the rest of the house running.
3. Make the electrics safe
If water has reached power points, lights or the switchboard, switch off the main switch only if you can reach it from dry ground. If you can't, stay away from it, ring 000 and call a licensed electrician.
4. Gas: leave, then call
If you smell gas, don't try to find the leak. If the gas meter valve is safe to reach on your way out, a quarter turn so the lever sits across the pipe closes it. If the smell is strong, just leave, then call from outside.
5. Stop using water if sewage is backing up
No flushing, showers, dishwasher or washing machine until the blockage is cleared. Keep children and pets away from the affected area.
6. Hot water tank leaking
Close the cold water valve on the inlet pipe at the unit. For an electric system, switch off its circuit at the switchboard, if you can reach it without standing in water. For gas, turn the unit's gas control off.
7. Limit the damage and take photos
Move what you can off the wet floor, put towels and buckets down, and photograph the damage and the failed part for your insurer before anything is cleaned up.

Make it safe
We check the water, and the gas if it is involved, is isolated properly, so nothing is still running while we work out what failed.
Find the cause
A burst pipe is usually easy to see. A leak inside a wall or under a slab isn't, so we use leak detection to find it without opening up more than we need to. For sewage coming up, we find where the drain is blocked, and use a drain camera where it helps.
A fixed price before we start
Once we know what is wrong, we tell you what the repair involves and give you a fixed price. Nothing starts until you say yes.
Repair, test and clean up
We repair the fault, turn the water back on, check for leaks and clean up before we leave. If the emergency was a symptom of something bigger, such as roots in an old clay sewer or a hot water tank at the end of its life, we show you and explain the options.

Concord
Our home suburb. Many of the interwar bungalows are around a century old and still drain through clay sewer under the back garden, where roots in the joints are the most common reason a sewer backs up. Some still have galvanised steel water services.
Concord West and Homebush
Powells Creek runs along both suburbs, and the low ground near it is where stormwater problems show up first in heavy rain. North of the railway in Homebush, apartments share drainage stacks, so a blockage low in the building backs up into the lowest units first.
Strathfield and Burwood
Federation homes on large blocks often have long sewer runs under mature gardens and trees. Burwood's town centre adds towers and restaurants, where grease in commercial drains is a constant factor.
Drummoyne, Five Dock and the Inner West
In Drummoyne's apartment blocks along the water, a failed shower seal, flexi hose or waste pipe shows up in the ceiling of the unit below. On the sloping blocks down to the river, a blocked stormwater pit sends heavy rain towards the house.

What counts as a plumbing emergency?

How do I turn off the water main?

I can smell gas. Should I call a plumber?

Stop using all water in the house, keep children and pets away, and call us. Check the overflow relief gully outside too: if it is overflowing, the blockage is in the main sewer line. Generally, the pipes on your property up to the Sydney Water main are the owner's responsibility, so we locate the blockage before anyone starts paying for it.
We have no water at all. Is that an emergency?
Check with a neighbour first. If they have no water either, it is most likely a Sydney Water supply issue. If it is only your property, check the main stop tap hasn't been turned off, then look for water where the service pipe runs. A burst on your water service is a plumbing emergency.
