About This Service
The overflow relief gully, or ORG, is the grated drain outside near the bathroom or laundry. It's connected to your sewer and set lower than the drains inside, so if the sewer blocks, sewage comes out there instead of through the shower or toilet. It only works if the grate is uncovered, loose enough to lift, and at the right height. Over the years, gardens and paving build up around gullies until they sit too low, grates break or go missing, and some get covered over entirely. We repair broken gullies and grates, raise gullies that are buried or too low, replace damaged ones, and move them where an extension or new paving has covered them. If yours has overflowed, the sewer is blocked or overloaded, and we find and clear the cause. Sewage overflows are covered 24/7, and for an emergency we aim to be with you within 60 minutes. Fixed price before we start, 12 months on our workmanship.

Lower than the drains inside
The grate has to be below the lowest drain in the house, so a backed-up sewer comes out outside first.
A little above the ground
Raised slightly above the ground or paving around it, so rain and garden water don't run into the sewer.
Uncovered and loose
The grate sits loose so it can lift when the sewer backs up. It can't be glued, screwed down, paved over or hidden under a garden bed.
Water in the trap
Like any drain, it holds water in a trap to stop sewer smells. A gully that smells has usually dried out; a bucket of water refills it.
Common Gully Repairs
Buried or too low
Mulch, soil or new paving has built up until the gully is level with the ground or below it. We raise the riser so the grate sits above the surface again.
Broken or missing grate
Grates crack, get mowed over or go missing. An open gully lets debris into the sewer, so we fit a proper loose-fitting grate.
Cracked or damaged gully
Old gullies crack around the riser, often from tree roots or ground movement. We replace the damaged section.
Covered by an extension or paving
A gully under a deck, slab or path can't do its job. It gets moved to a spot where it can, still lower than the drains inside.
Why It Overflowed
A gully that overflows is doing its job. The question is what made it, and that's what needs fixing.
A blockage in your sewer
The most common cause: roots in old clay joints, wipes, fat or debris between the gully and the street. We clear it with the jet blaster and, if it keeps happening, camera the line to see why.
Rainwater getting in
If it only overflows in heavy rain, stormwater is getting into the sewer: a gully that sits too low, a downpipe connected to the sewer, or cracked pipes.
The sewer main
If neighbours are affected too, the blockage may be in the shared main. Sydney Water looks after the mains; report it on 13 20 90.
How It Works
Our Process
Check the gully
Height, grate, riser and trap, and whether it's overflowed.
Check the line
If it's overflowed, the sewer checked for a blockage, with a camera if needed.
Fix it
Gully repaired, raised, replaced or moved, and the sewer cleared.
Test
Water run through, trap full, grate sitting loose and level.

Common Questions
FAQs
What is an overflow relief gully?
The grated drain outside near the bathroom or laundry, connected to the sewer. It's set lower than the drains inside so that a blocked sewer overflows outside instead of into the house.
My overflow relief gully is overflowing. What should I do?
Stop using water in the house: no flushing, showers or washing. Keep people and pets away from the overflow and call us. We're available 24/7 for sewage overflows.
Can you raise my overflow relief gully?
Yes. If the garden or paving has built up around it, we raise the riser so the grate sits above the ground again and still below the drains inside.
My gully grate is broken or missing. Does it matter?
Yes. Without a proper grate, leaves and debris get into the sewer, and the gully may not work as it should. We fit a loose-fitting grate that lifts if the sewer backs up.
Can I pave over or cover my overflow relief gully?
No. It has to stay uncovered, loose and at the right height, or sewage can come up inside instead. If new work has covered it, we can move it.
How much does an overflow relief gully repair cost?
We give you a fixed price before we start, with a $0 call-out fee.
