(02) 9139 8945 — available 24/7If You Smell Gas: What to Do First
Gas leaks are a safety issue before they are a plumbing one. Do these in order, and only what you can do safely.
No flames, no switches
Don't light anything, and don't turn lights, appliances or power points on or off. A switch can spark.
Turn the gas off at the meter, if it is safe
If you can reach the gas meter on your way out, turn the valve a quarter turn so the lever sits across the pipe. If the smell is strong, don't stop to do it.
Get everyone outside
Leave the doors open on the way out if you can, and keep everyone away from the house.
Call from outside
For natural gas in Sydney, call Jemena's faults and emergencies line on 131 909. If you use bottled LPG, call your gas supplier. If anyone is unwell or you think there is immediate danger, call 000.
Then get the leak repaired
Once it is safe, the leak has to be found and repaired by a licensed gas fitter before the gas goes back on.
Signs of a Gas Leak
A smell of gas
Gas has a rotten egg odour added so that leaks can be noticed. If you can smell it, take it seriously.
Hissing near a gas line or appliance
A hissing sound near a gas pipe, meter or appliance can mean gas is escaping.
Dead plants or a jump in the gas bill
Dead plants over a buried gas line, or a gas bill that has jumped for no obvious reason, are worth getting checked.
Testing Gas Connections
Every connection we make is tested
When we connect a gas appliance, we test the connection for leaks before we leave. On a recent job in Greystanes we replaced a cracked gas cooktop and tested the gas connection for leaks.
It has to be a licensed gas fitter
In NSW, gas work must be done by a licensed gas fitter. Don't try to fix a gas leak yourself.
