About This Service
Gas heaters and gas hot water units burn gas inside your home or right next to it, so they're worth having looked at before something goes wrong. A service by a licensed gas fitter covers a safety check of the appliance and its gas connection, a clean of the parts that collect dust and lint, and a test run to check it lights, burns and shuts down as it should. The connection is tested for leaks. If we find a worn part or a fault, we tell you what it is and give you a fixed price to fix it before doing anything more. We service gas heaters, and gas hot water systems including Rinnai, Rheem, Dux, Thermann, Vulcan and AquaMAX. Natural gas and LPG. 12 months on our workmanship.

Before winter
The best time to service a gas heater is before the first cold night, not on it. Heaters that sit unused for months collect dust, and sometimes spiders and lint.
A heater that's been in storage
Portable heaters that have been in a cupboard or garage for a few seasons, or came with a house you've just moved into, are worth a check before you plug them into the bayonet.
When the manual says so
Manufacturers set a service interval for their appliances. It's in the manual, and it's the best guide for your model.
Something seems off
A yellow or sooty flame, a smell when it's running, a pilot that keeps going out, or a hot water unit that's slow to fire up. Have it checked rather than waiting.
Gas Heaters
Portable heaters
Heaters that plug into a gas bayonet. We check the heater, its hose and plug-in fitting, and the bayonet, and run it to check the flame and safety shut-off.
Fixed and flued heaters
Heaters fixed in place, many with a flue that takes combustion gases outside. A blocked or damaged flue matters as much as the heater, so we look at both.
Ventilation
Heaters that aren't flued release combustion gases into the room and need the ventilation the manufacturer specifies. Don't block vents to keep the warmth in.
Gas Hot Water Units
Storage systems
We check the burner, pilot and gas control, the flue, the relief valve and the tank for signs of leaking or rust.
Continuous flow units
We check the unit lights and heats properly on demand, and that the gas, cold and hot connections are sound.
Faults we find
If a part is worn, such as a relief valve or a pilot component, we tell you and give you a fixed price for the repair. Our hot water repairs page covers the common faults.
If You Smell Gas: What to Do First
Do these in order, and only what you can do safely.
No flames, no switches
Turn the appliance off if it's safe to. Don't light anything, and don't turn lights, appliances or power points on or off.
Gas off at the meter, if it is safe
If you can reach the meter on your way out, turn the valve a quarter turn so the lever sits across the pipe. If the smell is strong, don't stop to do it.
Get outside and call
From outside, call Jemena on 131 909 for natural gas in Sydney, your supplier for LPG, or 000 if anyone is unwell or there's immediate danger. Then call a licensed gas fitter.

Common Questions
FAQs
What does a gas heater service involve?
A safety check of the heater, its gas connection and any flue or vents, a clean of the parts that collect dust and lint, and a test run to check the flame and the safety shut-off. The gas connection is tested for leaks.
How often should a gas heater be serviced?
Follow the service interval in the manufacturer's manual for your model. Before winter is the most practical time, and any heater that has been sitting unused for years should be checked before you use it.
Do you service gas hot water systems?
Yes. We service gas storage and continuous flow hot water systems, including Rinnai, Rheem, Dux, Thermann, Vulcan and AquaMAX.
My heater's flame is yellow. Is that a problem?
A healthy gas flame is mostly blue. A yellow, lazy or sooty flame can mean the heater isn't burning properly, so stop using it and have it checked by a licensed gas fitter.
What if you find a fault during the service?
We tell you what it is and why it matters, and give you a fixed price to fix it before doing any more work.
How much does a gas appliance service cost?
We give you a fixed price before we start, with a $0 call-out fee.
