About This Service
Gas heating starts with getting gas to the right spot. For a portable heater, that's a gas bayonet: a wall or floor outlet the heater's hose clicks into. For a fixed heater, it's a gas line run to the heater and connected to it. Either way, the work has to be done by a licensed gas fitter. We run the new gas line from your existing supply, fit the bayonet or connect the heater, then test everything for leaks before the heater goes into use. You get a fixed price before we start.

Gas bayonet points
A bayonet is a gas outlet in the wall or floor with a valve that seals itself when nothing is plugged in. You plug a portable gas heater's hose into it in winter and unplug it when the weather warms up. Many homes have one in the living room; a second in a bedroom or family room is a common addition.
Fixed gas heaters
A fixed heater stays where it is installed and is connected permanently to the gas line. Many fixed heaters are flued, meaning the combustion gases are piped outside, which the manufacturer's installation instructions cover.
Getting the gas there
The new line usually runs under the floor or through the roof space from your existing gas pipework. On a concrete slab with no underfloor access, the route takes more thought, so we look at it before we quote.
Using a Gas Heater Safely
General advice that applies to any gas heater. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for your model.
Ventilation
Heaters that aren't flued release combustion gases into the room, so they need the ventilation the manufacturer specifies. Don't block vents to keep the heat in.
Outdoor heaters stay outdoors
Patio and outdoor gas heaters are made for open spaces. Never bring one inside or use it in a closed-in area.
Have it checked
If a heater's flame looks yellow or sooty, it smells when running, or it has been sitting unused for years, have it checked before you rely on it.
If you smell gas
Turn the heater off. Don't light anything or touch switches. If it is safe on your way out, turn the gas off at the meter, get everyone outside and call from outside: Jemena on 131 909 for natural gas in Sydney, your supplier for LPG, or 000 in immediate danger. Then call a licensed gas fitter.

Common Questions
FAQs
What is a gas bayonet?
A gas outlet fitted in a wall or floor, with a valve that seals itself when nothing is plugged in. A portable gas heater's hose clicks into it, so you can plug the heater in for winter and put it away in summer.
Can you add a gas bayonet to another room?
Usually, yes. We run a new gas line from your existing gas pipework to the new spot, fit the bayonet and test it for leaks. How easy it is depends on the route, so we look before we quote.
Can I plug any gas heater into my bayonet?
The heater has to suit your gas type, natural gas or LPG. Check the label or manual before you buy, or tell us the model and we'll check.
Can I install a gas heater myself?
No. In NSW, gas fitting work, including connecting a gas appliance, must be done by a licensed gas fitter.
When should I book?
Before the cold weather if you can, so the heater is ready when you need it. We give you a fixed price before we start.
How much does a gas heater or bayonet installation cost?
It depends on the route the gas line has to take. We give you a fixed price before we start, with a $0 call-out fee.
