About This Service
Hot water systems store water hot enough to scald. A tempering valve or thermostatic mixing valve (TMV) blends hot and cold water so the water reaching bathroom taps and showers is cooler and safer. In most homes a tempering valve near the hot water system does this. TMVs control the temperature more precisely and are used where people more at risk of scalds use the water, such as aged care, childcare and healthcare. We install tempering valves and TMVs, service them, and replace them when they fail. A common sign of a failing valve is hot water in the kitchen but lukewarm water in the bathroom. You get a fixed price before we start.

Tempering valves
The usual choice in homes. Fitted near the hot water system, a tempering valve mixes in cold water so the hot water going to the bathrooms is a safer temperature. The kitchen and laundry are often left on full-temperature hot water.
Thermostatic mixing valves
A TMV controls the outlet temperature more precisely and is designed to shut off the hot water if the cold supply fails. They're used where people more at risk of scalds use the water, such as aged care, childcare and healthcare, and are usually fitted close to the outlets they serve.
Servicing
Both types wear with use. TMVs in particular are often required to be serviced and tested on a regular schedule where they are installed. We service them and replace worn valves.
Signs a Valve Needs Attention
Hot in the kitchen, lukewarm in the bathroom
The classic sign of a failing tempering valve. The kitchen is fed straight from the hot water system, the bathrooms through the valve.
Temperature that swings
Shower water that goes hot and cold, especially when another tap is turned on.
Bathroom water too hot
If the bathroom taps run very hot, the valve may not be working, or there may be no valve fitted.
Dripping from the valve
Water leaking from the valve body or its fittings.

FAQs
What's the difference between a TMV and a tempering valve?
Both blend hot and cold water to a safer temperature. A tempering valve is the usual choice in homes. A TMV controls the temperature more precisely and is used where people more at risk of scalds use the water, such as aged care, childcare and healthcare.
Why is my bathroom water lukewarm but the kitchen is hot?
A failing tempering valve is the usual cause. The bathroom outlets are fed through it, and when it wears or clogs, they go tepid while the kitchen stays hot. It's a common repair.
Do I need a tempering valve with a new hot water system?
Where one is required, we fit it as part of the installation. We'll tell you if it applies to your system.
Do TMVs need servicing?
Yes. They wear with use, and where they are installed they are often required to be serviced and tested regularly. We service TMVs and replace them when they need it.
Can I adjust the valve myself?
We'd advise against it. The temperature is set for safety, and adjusting it without the right checks can leave the water too hot.
How much does a TMV or tempering valve cost?
We give you a fixed price before we start, with a $0 call-out fee.
