Mascot began as market gardens after the first land grants in 1835, and formed the Municipality of North Botany in 1888 before taking the name Mascot in 1911. Sydney's airport opened here in the 1920s, and the Cooks River was diverted between 1947 and 1953 to make room for it. Bayside Council has a dedicated flood study for the Mascot, Rosebery and Eastlakes catchment. Groundwater across parts of the Botany area is contaminated by past industry, and domestic groundwater use is banned in some zones, so a backyard bore is not something to put in without checking first.
