Pyrmont was quarried, refined and shipped from for more than a century. Its sandstone was cut from quarries from the 1850s, the CSR sugar refinery occupied the northern point, and wharves and wool stores lined the water. Around 1900 some 30,000 people lived here; by 1990 it was closer to 900. Redevelopment from 1992 filled the peninsula with apartments, including Jacksons Landing on the old CSR site. Pyrmont is in the City of Sydney.
Pyrmont's housing falls into three groups, and each brings different plumbing. A few rows of nineteenth-century workers' cottages and terraces survive, such as the heritage-listed cottages in Cross and Scott Streets, built between 1879 and 1895 without council supervision. Most people, though, live in apartment buildings put up since the 1990s, many of which are now around thirty years old. Underneath it all is sandstone, which is why the quarries were here in the first place.
