Redfern takes its name from surgeon William Redfern, granted land here in 1817. The Redfern Estate was subdivided in 1842 into eight regular blocks and built up with terraces from the 1840s to the 1890s, much of it now a heritage conservation area. In the 1960s the Housing Commission added towers such as William McKell Place, and in recent years apartment buildings have gone up around the station. At the 2021 census around two-thirds of homes were flats. Redfern merged into the City of Sydney in 1949.
Redfern's terraces are among the oldest in the inner city, and many still drain through nineteenth-century earthenware under the back courtyard. Redfern Park, at the centre of the suburb, was once a swamp known as Boxley's Lagoon, and it was not until the 1880s that it was turned into a park. Around it, the streets hold everything from 1840s terraces to 1960s towers to new apartments, often on the same block, so the right fix depends on which kind of building you are in.
