Plumber Enmore

Blocked drains, street tree roots, shared sewers and stormwater across Enmore, Newtown, Stanmore and Marrickville.

Enmore is a small suburb, less than half a square kilometre, squeezed between Newtown, Stanmore, Petersham and Marrickville, in Inner West Council. Enmore Road, which branches off King Street, is lined mostly with Victorian shopfronts, and the Enmore Theatre, first built in 1908 and given its Art Deco front in the 1930s, stands out as the modern front in a street of late nineteenth and early twentieth century buildings. At the 2021 census almost half of Enmore's homes were terraces, semis or townhouses, about a third were apartments and only around one in six was a freestanding house.

Enmore's plumbing is old-house plumbing on small lots. The Llewellyn Estate heritage conservation area, in the triangle between Enmore, Edgware and Edinburgh Roads, is late Victorian and Federation houses, semi-detached pairs and paired single-storey terraces, with brick-paved footpaths and mature brush box street trees. Pairs and rows like these often drain through one shared line before it reaches the main, and big street trees are an obvious thirst for an old sewer joint. Enmore Road splits the suburb's stormwater too. Inner West Council puts the land north of it in the Johnstons Creek catchment and the land south of it in the Eastern Channel East catchment, and describes flooding in the area as flash flooding that arrives within hours of heavy rain.

Every part of Sydney has its own plumbing character, shaped by the age of the housing, the ground it sits on, and the weather it takes. Here is what we are called out for most often around Enmore.

The brush box that line Enmore's heritage streets are decades old, and their roots follow moisture under footpaths and front gardens. An ageing sewer joint that weeps even a little is enough to draw them in. A drain that clears and then blocks again a few months later in the same spot is the classic sign, and the fix that lasts is sealing that joint, usually by relining.

Semi-detached pairs and paired terraces were commonly connected through a single sewer line that serves both houses before it meets the main. When it blocks past the junction, both homes are affected, and the question of who pays depends on exactly where the fault is. A camera with a locator answers that in metres from the inspection opening.

Enmore Road's restaurants, cafés and bars sit on top of old drainage. Fats that leave a kitchen warm set hard further down the line, which is why Sydney Water makes grease traps a condition of connection for retail food premises. Shops with a flat or home behind or above them can find the blockage backing up in the residence first.

On a small Enmore lot there is little lawn to soak up a downpour, so the rain off the roof and paving has to go into the stormwater system and keep moving. Short, intense storms are what cause trouble here. A silted pit or a crushed line that copes with steady rain will overflow into the courtyard or under the back door in a cloudburst.

Common Questions

In the older houses and terraces it is most often roots, from street trees or garden trees, getting into an old sewer joint. Wipes, grease and a sagging section of pipe account for most of the rest. A camera inspection tells you which, so you know whether clearing will last.

It depends on where the blockage is. Before the shared junction it is usually the owner of that section; on the shared part it is normally a matter for both owners. We locate the fault with a camera and give you the footage and the measurements so it can be settled fairly.

Often, yes. If the pipe is cracked or rooty but still in one piece, it can be relined from the inside through an existing opening. Where a section has collapsed it has to be dug out, and the camera shows which situation you are in.

Water from the street or a creek is council's matter, and Inner West Council holds the flood information for each address. Water that comes off your own roof and paving and has nowhere to go is usually a blocked pit, grate or line on your property, which we can find and fix.
