Water hammer is the bang or thud you hear when water flowing through a pipe is stopped suddenly, by a mixer tap snapped shut or the valve in a washing machine or dishwasher closing. The moving water slams to a stop and the shock travels along the pipe. If the pipe isn't clipped firmly, it jumps against the timber or wall, and that's the knock you hear. High water pressure makes it worse. Over time the repeated shock can loosen clips and joints and wear out valves. We work out what's causing the noise, then fix it: securing loose pipes, dealing with high pressure, fitting a water hammer arrestor where it suits, or replacing the worn part.

Classic water hammer. Washing machines and dishwashers are common triggers because their valves close very quickly. So are single-lever mixer taps flicked shut.

Often a pipe that isn't clipped firmly, vibrating against the frame, or a loose or worn washer or jumper valve inside a tap.

Can point to water pressure that is too high, a partly closed valve, or a worn part in a tap, valve or toilet cistern inlet.

Air trapped in the pipes after the water has been shut off for work can cause spluttering and knocking for a short while. If it doesn't settle, get it checked.

Where we can get to the pipes, under the house, in the roof space or in a cupboard, we add or replace clips so the pipe can't move. This often quietens a knock on its own.

High mains pressure makes water hammer louder and harder on your plumbing. A pressure limiting valve on the incoming water service brings it down to a steadier level.

A small device fitted near a fast-closing valve, such as the washing machine taps, that absorbs the shock. Useful where the noise comes from one appliance.

If a tap or valve is the source of the rattle or hum, replacing the worn washer, jumper valve or cartridge usually fixes it.

How It Works

01

When it happens and which tap or appliance sets it off.

02

Check the water pressure and look for loose or unclipped pipes.

03

We explain the cause and give you a fixed price for the fix.

04

Secure, regulate or replace, then run the taps again to check.

Common Questions

The bang you hear when flowing water is stopped suddenly, usually by a tap or an appliance valve closing quickly. The shock travels along the pipe and makes it jump or knock.

It can be, over time. Repeated shocks can loosen pipe clips and joints and wear out valves and appliance parts. It's worth fixing rather than living with.

Washing machine valves open and close very fast, which is a common cause of water hammer. Securing the pipes, a water hammer arrestor at the machine's taps, or bringing high water pressure down usually fixes it.

Yes. High pressure makes water hammer louder and can cause humming or whistling. We test the pressure and, if it's high, can fit or replace a pressure limiting valve.

Usually not. Most noise is fixed by securing pipes we can reach from under the house or in the roof space, regulating the pressure, or fitting an arrestor at the appliance. If a pipe in a wall is the problem, we explain the options first.

It depends on the cause. We give you a fixed price before we start, with a $0 call-out fee.
