Guildford grew up around its railway station, which opened in 1876. The name first belonged to a hamlet on Dog Trap Road, now Woodville Road; once the station opened, the new settlement around it took the name and the original became Old Guildford. Estates were subdivided from the 1870s, but Guildford stayed a small village until a building boom between the wars, and the Housing Commission built here in the 1940s. The suburb is in Cumberland Council. At the 2021 census just over half of its homes were freestanding houses, about three in ten were flats or apartments and the rest were semis and townhouses.

We have cleared blocked drains in Guildford and found and repaired a leaking pipe here, so these are streets we know rather than a name on a list. Two pieces of water infrastructure run through the suburb. The first is Sydney's water supply itself: the Pipehead complex off Frank Street, where water from Prospect Reservoir arrives along the Lower Canal and leaves in three large mains towards Potts Hill, laid in 1888, around 1900 and 1925. That pipeline corridor runs along much of Guildford's southern edge and forms the back boundary of some lots. The second is Duck Creek, whose upper reaches through Guildford and Merrylands have been channelled and piped underground. Cumberland Council's overland flood study for the Duck River, Duck Creek and A'Becketts Creek catchments includes Guildford. Above ground, the suburb is changing lot by lot, with granny flats and dual occupancies going in behind and beside the older houses.

Every part of Sydney has its own plumbing character, shaped by the age of the housing, the ground it sits on, and the weather it takes. Here is what we are called out for most often around Guildford.

Much of Guildford's older housing went up in the interwar boom and the years after the Second World War, so the sewer under a typical house has been in the ground for seventy to a hundred years. Over that time joints open, roots find their way in, and a line that once ran cleanly starts catching paper and wipes. A drain that blocks again a few months after it was cleared is telling you the pipe itself needs looking at, and a camera shows where and why.

A granny flat or second dwelling at the back of a Guildford block usually drains into the house's existing sewer line on its way to the main. If that older line is cracked, root-affected or laid with poor fall, adding a second kitchen, bathroom and laundry to it shows up the weakness quickly. Checking the existing line on camera before the new work connects to it saves finding out after the slab is poured.

A leaking pipe in an older home often shows up as a damp patch, a meter that keeps ticking with every tap off, or a water bill that jumps for no reason. On houses that have been extended or re-clad over the years, the pipe can run somewhere nobody expects. We trace it first so the repair goes in the right place, rather than opening walls and floors to look.

With Duck Creek's upper reaches running in channels and pipes, a big storm can fill the system and send water across the ground along its old flow paths. On your own block, what matters is that pits, grates and the stormwater line are clear and falling the right way, so roof and yard water gets away as soon as the street system can take it.
