Granville began as Parramatta Junction, the terminus of the colony's first railway line in 1855, and took its present name in 1880. Estates were released through the 1880s land boom, the town was connected to water in 1889, and industry grew up around the railway and Clyde. Its houses are mostly freestanding weatherboard, fibro and unrendered brick on blocks of around 500 to 600 square metres, but by the 2021 Census more than half of Granville's homes were flats or apartments. The suburb is split between Cumberland Council and the City of Parramatta.

On Anzac Day 1974 torrential rain sent Duck Creek through Granville and did major damage, and Cumberland Council now includes the suburb in its overland flood study for these catchments. The housing splits two ways: three- and four-storey blocks of flats, now the most common kind of home here, and the older cottages between them, some on raised timber floors and some with plumbing that has been patched rather than renewed over a long life.

Which council looks after the stormwater in my street?
Granville is split between Cumberland Council and the City of Parramatta, so it depends which side of the boundary you are on. Pits and pipes in the street belong to the council; the pipes and pits inside your boundary are yours, and those are what we repair.
Our flat has poor water pressure. Is it just us?
