Merrylands is named after the English home of Arthur Todd Holroyd, who bought land here in 1855. The railway station opened in 1878 and subdivision followed, but the district was as much industry as housing for a long time: around 1929 there were 14 brick and tile works in the Merrylands area, and Stockland Merrylands stands on the site of one of them. The Housing Commission built here after the Second World War, and since the 2010s high-rise apartments have gone up in the town centre. The suburb is in Cumberland Council.
