Zetland was once a lagoon and wetlands, drained in the early 1900s for the Victoria Park racecourse. After the war the site became a car factory, run by Nuffield and later BMC and Leyland until it closed in 1975, and then a naval stores depot. From the early 2000s the land was redeveloped as Victoria Park, with around 3,000 homes in terraces, walk-ups and high-rise, and today Zetland is the heart of the Green Square town centre. It is part of the City of Sydney.
Green Square was built on a floodplain, and in April 2015 floodwater reached 2.3 metres in Joynton Avenue. The City of Sydney's answer was a stormwater drain of more than two kilometres, running deep underground from Epsom Road in Zetland to Alexandra Canal, which has sharply reduced flood risk in the town centre. The same drain feeds one of Australia's largest stormwater harvesting schemes: water is treated at the Green Infrastructure Centre and piped back into new town centre buildings for toilets, washing machines and gardens. So some Zetland apartments have two water supplies, and plumbing work in them has to keep those separate.

Recycled water pipes and taps are usually marked in purple, and your building manager or strata can confirm whether the building is connected. We can also confirm it on site before touching anything.
Is recycled water safe to drink?
No. It is treated for toilets, washing machines and gardens only. Never connect a drinking water appliance, such as a fridge or filter tap, to it.
Does Zetland still flood?
The trunk drain has greatly reduced the risk around the town centre. Local ponding can still happen when a property's own grates or pits are blocked, and that part we can fix.
