Fairfield railway station opened in 1856, and its station building is described as the oldest surviving railway building in New South Wales. For a long time the district was mostly farmland. After the Second World War, returned servicemen, European migrants and large Housing Commission estates filled it in through the 1950s. By the 2021 Census, flats and apartments made up almost half of Fairfield's homes, clustered around a town centre that now has some newer high-rise.
