Cabramatta takes its name from the Cabrogal people of the Dharug nation. The railway arrived in the 1850s, the local council merged with Fairfield in 1948, and after the war the migrant hostels here gave first homes to European migrants and, later, Vietnamese refugees. Today it is one of Sydney's best-known food destinations, with restaurants and grocers packed along John Street, Freedom Plaza and the arcades and lanes around them. At the 2021 census its homes were an even split: about four in ten separate houses, four in ten flats and two in ten townhouses or semis, and almost half were rented. Cabramatta West, once part of the same suburb, is mostly houses.

The town centre and the residential streets have different plumbing. In the centre it is food: every restaurant and takeaway connected to the sewer has to put its greasy wastewater through Sydney Water-listed pre-treatment, usually a grease trap sized to the business and installed by a licensed plumber, and when a trap is undersized or overdue for pumping the grease ends up in the drains. In the streets around it the stock runs from post-war fibro and 1960s red brick veneer houses, both photographed in Fairfield City Council's heritage collection, to unit blocks and newer townhouses. The ground is Cumberland Plain clay, which the state's salinity guidelines for Western Sydney link to damage to pipes, concrete and brickwork. Cabramatta Creek, part of the Georges River system, runs along the south and west, and Long Creek drains parts of Cabramatta towards Prospect Creek.

Every part of Sydney has its own plumbing character, shaped by the age of the housing, the ground it sits on, and the weather it takes. Here is what we are called out for most often around Cabramatta.

Few suburbs in Sydney cook as much as Cabramatta's centre does. Grease that gets past an undersized or overdue grease trap cools and sets in the line, and the first sign is often a floor waste backing up in the kitchen during service. Jet blasting clears it; the lasting fix is a trap that is sized for the business and pumped out on schedule, as Sydney Water's trade waste rules expect.

Fibro and brick veneer houses from the 1950s and 60s are now sixty to seventy years old, and many still drain through the sewer they were connected with. Clay that shrinks and swells around the pipe opens joints, and roots find them. A blockage that keeps coming back, or an overflow gully that bubbles, usually means it is time to look at the line on camera.

Granny flats, townhouses and units now share blocks that once held a single house. Each new bathroom and kitchen adds load to the existing line, so before a second dwelling is connected it is worth checking that the old pipe is sound and has the fall to carry it.

Common Questions

Yes. We clear blocked kitchen drains and floor wastes, jet blast grease out of the line, and repair or replace grease trap plumbing. Sydney Water requires food businesses to use listed pre-treatment equipment sized to the business and installed by a licensed plumber, so we can also tell you if a trap looks undersized for how much you cook.

Yes. Our phones are answered 24/7, so a kitchen drain can be cleared before you open or after you close rather than in the middle of service.

Yes, with the right care. Fibro houses from the 1950s and 60s often contain bonded asbestos cement sheeting, which is low-risk if left alone. We plan the work to avoid cutting it, and where it has to come out it must be removed by a licensed asbestos removalist.
