Rockdale was Frog Hollow, then White Gum Flat and West Botany, before its first postmistress suggested the present name in 1878, after the sandstone country on its western side. Houses followed the railway, which opened in 1884, and the Princes Highway is still its main road, with Rockdale Plaza at the southern end. It is one of the administrative centres of Bayside Council. Below ground, some of Sydney's oldest sewer infrastructure runs nearby: the heritage-listed Western Outfall Main Sewer, built in the 1890s, runs from Arncliffe toward Kogarah Golf Course.
