Baulkham Hills was farmland for most of its history: the first settler, William Joyce, was granted land here in 1794, and his rebuilt farmhouse still stands in Valerie Avenue. Suburban housing spread across the old farms from the 1960s, which makes much of the suburb older than the estates further out in the Hills. In 2018 its northern edge became part of Norwest and Bella Vista. Baulkham Hills is in The Hills Shire, which was called Baulkham Hills Shire until 2008.

The ground changes as you move through the suburb. The ridges carry clay soils weathered from Wianamatta shale, while the land falls away to sandstone gullies around Darling Mills Creek and Bidjigal Reserve, a 186-hectare bushland reserve Baulkham Hills shares with its neighbours. Homes on the ridge tops deal with clay that moves as it wets and dries; homes on the gully edges deal with slope, rock and runoff. Across both, the defining factor is age. A house built in the 1960s or 1970s may still have much of its original sewer and water pipework, now well past fifty years in the ground.
