Your Local Vaucluse Plumber
Vaucluse takes up much of the South Head peninsula, between the harbour at Parsley Bay and Nielsen Park and the ocean cliffs at Diamond Bay. It is split between Woollahra and Waverley councils, and was its own municipality from 1895 until 1948. Wentworth's Vaucluse House dates from the 1820s and 1830s, but the suburb as it stands is mostly twentieth century: Woollahra's planning controls describe Federation and Inter-War bungalows and Inter-War flat buildings in the east, and large houses in the west, where recent rebuilds tend to be three storeys. At the 2021 census just under half the homes were separate houses and about 40% were flats.
Vaucluse sits on Hawkesbury sandstone, the rock that breaks away in blocks to form the cliffs along this side of the harbour and the ocean. Building and repairing drains in rock is slower than in clay, which is one reason a camera inspection and relining make sense before anyone starts digging. The sewer itself is being changed. Sydney Water says wastewater from parts of Vaucluse and Diamond Bay still flows untreated into the ocean below the cliffs, from three coastal outfalls, and its Vaucluse and Diamond Bay project will divert it into the main system: a new pumping station at Parsley Bay is due to be working by late 2026 and the Diamond Bay works by mid-2028. That is Sydney Water's pipe, not yours, but the line from your house to their connection is the owner's to look after.

Common Plumbing Problems in Vaucluse
Every part of Sydney has its own plumbing character, shaped by the age of the housing, the ground it sits on, and the weather it takes. Here is what we are called out for most often around Vaucluse.
Old drains laid through sandstone
Under a Federation or Inter-War house the sewer was often cut into rock and laid in clay pipe. Roots and broken joints are the usual faults, and replacing the pipe means breaking rock and lifting whatever has been built on top since. A camera shows exactly where the damage is, and relining repairs it from inside.
Large houses with long pipe runs
With more bathrooms on more levels, a new three-storey house asks a lot of its hot water and water pressure. Slow hot water to the top floor, uneven pressure between showers and a system that runs out are all about sizing and layout, and worth getting right before a renovation closes the walls.
Shared pipes in Inter-War flat buildings
With around four in ten Vaucluse homes in flat buildings, plenty of jobs start with water coming through a ceiling or a drain shared by several units. Finding which unit or which pipe the problem comes from is what lets the owners corporation act on it.

Common Questions
FAQs
Is Sydney Water's Vaucluse sewer project anything I need to do something about?
Usually not. Sydney Water is diverting the old ocean outfalls into its main system, with Parsley Bay due by late 2026 and Diamond Bay by mid-2028. Your own pipes from the house to Sydney Water's connection stay your responsibility, and that is the part we inspect and repair.
Our drain runs through rock. Does it have to be dug up to fix it?
Often not. A camera inspection shows whether the pipe is sound enough to reline, which repairs it from the inside without breaking sandstone or lifting paving.
Our hot water runs out with everyone home. What can be done?
In a larger house it is usually a sizing or layout problem. We look at how many outlets the system has to serve and how far the water travels, then recommend a system or a change in layout that suits the house.
Do you cover Watsons Bay, Dover Heights and Rose Bay?
