Sutherland's township formed around the railway station opened in December 1885 as the temporary end of the Illawarra line from Hurstville. The Shire was proclaimed in 1906, and Sutherland is still its administrative centre. The suburb sits on a prominent ridge that runs east across the Shire, with the Woronora River on its western side and the Royal National Park to the south. Sewerage also came comparatively late: preliminary schemes for sewering Sutherland and Cronulla were drawn up in 1939, and work on the Cronulla scheme, which takes Sutherland's sewage through a deep tunnel, began in 1952.

Sutherland was not sewered when it was first settled. Schemes for sewering Sutherland and Cronulla were prepared in 1939 and construction of the Cronulla scheme began in 1952, so older homes were connected after they were built and the house and its sewer line can be different ages.
