Plumber Edgecliff

Apartment and strata plumbing, terrace drainage and stormwater across Edgecliff, Darling Point and Rushcutters Bay.

Edgecliff is a small suburb, about a third of a square kilometre, four kilometres east of the city in the Municipality of Woollahra. It is named for the rocky cliff it sits on, which was heavily quarried in the early colonial years. Its commercial centre runs along New South Head Road near the top of the ridge, around the station that opened with the Eastern Suburbs line in 1979, and the land falls away from there towards Double Bay and Rushcutters Bay. At the 2021 census about seven in ten homes were apartments and most of the rest semi-detached.

Edgecliff's plumbing follows its housing. Most residents live in apartment buildings, so a lot of the work involves shared pipes, strata and the apartment below. The semi-detached houses and terraces have the older problems: original sewer lines under narrow lots, often shared with the house next door. Some of the history is still standing too. Edgecliff House dates from around 1861, and the Fiona and Glenrock mansions from the 1860s and 1870s now belong to Ascham School. Stormwater from Edgecliff runs into two catchments that Woollahra Council has studied for flooding, Rushcutters Bay and Double Bay. In the upper Rushcutters Bay catchment, most of the public pipes were laid by council in the 1930s.

Every part of Sydney has its own plumbing character, shaped by the age of the housing, the ground it sits on, and the weather it takes. Here is what we are called out for most often around Edgecliff.

When most of a suburb lives in apartments, most plumbing faults involve more than one owner. A blocked stack backs up into the lowest unit, a leaking shower shows up in the ceiling below, and a hot water problem can be in your lot or in the building's plant. Working out which, early, decides who arranges the repair and who pays.

Semi-detached houses and terraces on narrow lots often share a sewer line with the neighbour before it reaches the main. A blockage beyond the junction affects both homes, and the repair may need access from both properties. A camera inspection shows exactly where the fault sits in relation to the boundary.

Edgecliff is named after a cliff, and rock close to the surface is part of building here. When a buried pipe sits in rock, digging it up is slow and disruptive, especially on a small lot with little room to work. Where the pipe is still continuous, relining through an access point avoids the excavation.

From the ridge along New South Head Road the land drops towards Double Bay and Rushcutters Bay, and properties on the slopes take water from the streets above in a storm. Blocked grates, silted pits and cracked lines on a sloping site send that water towards the house rather than away from it.

Common Questions

Yes. We work for unit owners, tenants, building managers and owners corporations, on leaks between units, blocked stacks, hot water and fixtures.

A camera inspection first. It shows whether the blockage is on your side of the junction, on the shared section or past it, which settles who should fix it and whether clearing or relining is the right repair.

Often, yes. If the pipe is cracked or has roots in its joints but has not collapsed, it can be relined from the inside. A section that has collapsed has to be dug out, and the camera footage shows which situation you are in.

Yes. We cover Edgecliff and the suburbs around it, including Darling Point, Double Bay, Rushcutters Bay, Paddington and Woollahra.
