Governor Macquarie founded Campbelltown on 1 December 1820 and named it after his wife's maiden name, and the railway reached it in 1858. For more than a century it stayed a country town on Queen Street, which still has heritage buildings such as the old post office and Dredges Cottage. That changed in the early 1960s, when the state made Campbelltown a satellite city: the Campbelltown East estates went up from 1960, the Housing Commission began an estate off Burns Road in 1961, and the 1970s brought a massive expansion, including the Commission's Claymore and Airds estates nearby. At the 2021 census about half of Campbelltown's homes were separate houses, a third were flats and the rest townhouses or semis, and almost half were rented. Campbelltown City Council covers the suburb.

Houses from the sixties and seventies have reached the age where their original fittings and pipework are wearing out together. Many hot water units have already been replaced at least once, taps and toilet cisterns need rebuilding, and sewer lines have had fifty or sixty years of ground movement to crack and take on roots. The ground is the shale clay of the Cumberland Plain, and the NSW Government's salinity map for Western Sydney covers it from Windsor down to Campbelltown, because salt in these soils damages concrete, brickwork and pipes. Stormwater runs to Bow Bowing Creek, fed by Fishers Ghost Creek and Smith's Creek; the council concrete-lined it in 1979 after repeated flooding at Leumeah and Minto, and its floodplain risk management study for the Bow Bowing, Bunbury Curran Creek catchment covers most of the city from Ambarvale to Glenfield. The commercial side is different again: the warehouses and workshops along Hepher Road and the town centre need annual backflow testing under Sydney Water's rules.
